Alpine Quad N°2: Susten - Grimsel - Nufenen - Gotthard
Route Information
Description
The tour starts with the Susten Pass, one of the most harmonious Alpine passes for racing cyclists. The even gradient of 7.5 % on average makes it pleasant to roll up, but the climb continues for 17 km. Once at the top, a breathtaking view of the Steingletscher rewards the effort. The descent towards Innertkirchen is rapid, with some wide bends that allow high speeds. From Innertkirchen, the long ascent to the Grimsel Pass begins. This pass impresses with its reservoirs and barren rocky landscapes. The gradient varies between 5 and 9%, with the last few kilometers posing a particular challenge due to the serpentines. The road surface is excellent and makes both the ascent and the descent to Ulrichen a pleasure. At 2478 meters, the Nufenen is the highest pass on this tour and one of the most demanding in Switzerland. The ramps of up to 13% demand maximum concentration and strength reserves. The wind can also become an enemy here. The descent into Ticino is steep and fast, so good braking technique is required. The finale leads over the historic Tremola road to the Gotthard Pass. The serpentines paved with cobblestones demand riding technique and a good road bike setup. This climb is a tough one, but the nostalgic atmosphere of the old pass road makes up for the exertions. Once at the top, the descent to Andermatt is the crowning glory.
