Wassen, a charming village at 930 metres above sea level, became famous thanks to the old Gotthard route, on which ‘s'Chileli vo Wassen’, the church of Wassen, can be seen three times in spectacular helical tunnels. Even before the Gotthard tunnel opened in 1882, Wassen was an important stop-off point for travellers passing through on their way to the Gotthard and Susten passes in the 13th century. The picturesque village centre, with historic houses and a beautiful fountain, tells of this history. The church in Wassen, although widely known, is rarely visited from the inside and is well worth a visit. Legends remain alive in Wassen, such as the Pfaffensprung, where water has moulded the rocks over millions of years. Legends tell of priests who fell here. Today, the gorge can be safely viewed from a bridge.
The Susten Pass connects the canton of Uri with the Bernese Oberland and offers an impressive journey. The Susten road, completed in 1946, leads through the wildly romantic Meiental valley and invites you to enjoy numerous hikes.
