Church of St Michael
Description
The church of St Michael in Gurtnellen-Dorf was consecrated in 1783, after the first church from 1504 and an extension from 1586 had to make way for the new building. The villagers were actively involved in the construction of the third church. The interior of the church impresses with its simple elegance in white, complemented by baroque elements. The three magnificent altars are by Lukas Regli, while the ceiling, wall and altarpieces were created by Karl Meinrad Triner and his son Franz Xaver. Particularly noteworthy is the high altar painting, which shows St Michael defeating a demon with God's help. This painting was replaced at the end of the 19th century, but was returned to its original place during the renovation in 1984/85. The squat tower of the church is the result of repeated avalanches on the Geissberg. On entering the church, visitors experience a special sense of calm and are impressed by the harmonious interior design.
