Open-air museum Antonini Quarry
Description
The open-air museum Antonini Quarry, above the railway station in Wassen, provides an insight into the history of the quarries in Uri, which characterised the upper Uri region after the opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882. There used to be many quarries in Gurtnellen, Wassen and Göschenen, but only a few are still active today. Nature has largely overgrown the once visible cuts. The granite from the Wassner quarry was widely used, from roads and bridges such as the Middle Rhine Bridge in Basel to buildings in Wassen and even a monument in Manila.
The museum, ideal for a break on the Gottardo hiking trail, has an exhibition, information boards, old tools, a biotope and a large fireplace. It is open from May to November and admission is free.
