Description

This day tour starts on the Gotthard Pass. You can easily reach the starting point by post bus from Andermatt. Start at the Gotthard hospice and follow a short stretch of main road. Before this enters the tunnel you turn left onto the trail. This leads along a steep slope with the best views of the old Tremolastrasse. There is a short stretch where you will have to push your bike (5 to 10 minutes), and because of the path's exposed location bikers need to be cautious and experienced riders. You can avoid this trail by simply staying on the road. At the end of the tunnel you turn right and follow the gravel road before arriving at the original route about 200 metres further on. At the end of the trail you will come across some old military quarters and from there you follow the Alpine road and go towards Alpe di Fieud. The trail offers a magnificent view over the Leventina and the Bedretto Valley, and in the southwest you can see the Gries Glacier gleaming on the horizon. The trail is well developed and is mainly flat and downhill. Above the village of Villa you will see a huge protective wall; turn right here and continue along the Alpine road, which runs above the protective wall and across the slope. Shortly after crossing the Ri di Bedretto stream the trail turns left and towards Bedretto. This section of trail, and especially the first 100 altitude metres, presents an extreme challenge: Trail-lovers are sure to regard it as a highlight of this tour. In the village of Ronco you can sample local delicacies at the Restaurant Stella Alpina; the restaurant's fresh, homemade pasta is perfect for any biker on the go. After you have fortified yourself, it is time to tackle the ascent towards Alpe Cristallina. The Alpine road leads through a sparse mountain forest and offers frequent clear views towards the Gotthard south ramp and Valle Canaria. Once you pass Alpe Cristallina you have completed most of the ascent, and now you continue on to Alp Piano di Pescia. If you are running out of energy, you can turn left here and follow the forest path to the Nufenen road and continue along the road to Airolo. Now a beautiful trail takes you to the next Alp (Cascina della Croce) and from there back on an Alpine road and as far as Cascina Nuova. From there, you follow the forest road to Culiscio and the road above Nante to Airolo Station. Here you can load the bikes on the train and return through the tunnel to Göschenen and Andermatt.

Note(s) The post bus leaves from the Bahnhofplatz Andermatt at 09:10 every day between mid-June and mid-October. It is recommended that you pre-book your bike transport. Departure from Airolo Station: every hour always at XX:58; the journey back to Andermatt including changing at Göschenen takes about 25 minutes.
