Description

This day tour starts on the Gotthard Pass. You can easily reach the starting point by post bus from Andermatt. The route starts by following the Alpine Bike Route towards Passo Scimfuss, the highest point of the entire tour. From here you have a beautiful view over the Leventina and the Bedretto Valley with Airolo way down below. The little road then gives way to an Alpine path that takes you over the Alpe di Pontino and into the Valle Canaria. Shortly after passing the small stone houses at Sotto Corte the path crosses the creek to the left. You then follow the track to Madrano. Further on, the route follows the road to the entrance to the village of Brugnasco; for those who are thirsty, there is a café in the village centre. The climb to Lake Ritom passes mainly through forest, which only starts to thin out after the mountain station for the Ritom Funicular. Your view from the dam across the lake gives you a clear view of the Passo del Uomo and Sole, two other biking highlights in this area. The Ristorante Lago Ritom is located at one end of the dam; it serves a simple menu of the day and various meat and cheese platters. The chef focuses on products from the region, and especially on cheese from Alpe Piora, which is situated just behind Lake Ritom. You can make the descent to Altanca on an old muleteer's track. After you reach the rustic village of Altanca follow the road to Brugnasco - shortly after the village, the hiking trail branches off to the left towards Madrano. The entrance to the trail is a bit difficult to pass, but after a few metres it affords pure cycling pleasure. From Madrano you continue on to Airolo Station; from here there is an hourly train to Göschenen, where you can catch a connection to Andermatt.

Note(s) The post bus to the Gotthard Pass leaves the Bahnhofplatz Andermatt; it is recommended that you pre-book your bike transport. Departure from Airolo Station to Göschenen: every hour at XX:58; the journey back to Andermatt including changing at Göschenen takes about 25 minutes. Ritom Funicular: The funicular runs daily from June to October from 8.30 am - 6.30 pm.
