Description

From the village bridge, the path leads via Mariahilf Chapel to the entrance of the protection forest. On the hike through the Urserenwald forest, you will come across several information boards that provide lots of interesting facts about the protection forest and its function. Hikers reach their destination, the Gurschenalp with its chairlift station, soon after the tree line. You then walk along the path to the large cross at Männdli directly below a cable car mast, where you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Ursern Valley. After a breather, head down the 'Gigen' back to Andermatt. The narrower hiking trail leads past plants, meadows and streams. You can enjoy views of Hospental and the mountain scenery.

The forest above Andermatt was of particular importance centuries ago and was placed under protection as early as 1397. The reason for this is that the forest offered and still offers protection against avalanches, rockfall and flooding.
