Travellers have been staying in Realp since the 18th century, when the Capuchin hospice served as accommodation. Goethe also honoured the mountain village in 1779. Over 100 years later, the construction of the Furka Pass road brought more tourists to Realp. In 1926, the opening of the Furka-Oberalp railway (now the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn) made travelling from east to west easier. In 1982, exactly a century after the opening of the Gotthard tunnel, the Furka base tunnel was inaugurated. A scene for the James Bond film ‘Goldfinger’ was filmed on the Furka Pass road in 1964. The film centred on a sweeping curve on the Uri side of the Furka Pass, which is now known as the ‘James Bond Goldfinger Curve’.
This village, harmoniously embedded in the landscape, is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet and nature lovers. In summer, the Furka steam railway is reminiscent of the old days and the probably ‘most alpine’ golf course turns a round of golf into a hike. In winter, children ski gently down the slopes in the ski area and even those returning to skiing feel safe here.
