Description

We start our hike at the church in Surrein, whose church tower hosts one of the largest bat colonies in Switzerland during the summer. After the last typical Grisons wooden houses, we try to imagine how it was back then when noble guests were transported on this path to Tenigerbad more than a hundred years ago by sedan chairs or horse carriages to have their illnesses treated there. The path meanders first along the Rein Sumvitg and later steadily climbs. We repeatedly enjoy beautiful views of the wide and rocky stream bed. Alders, birches, and firs alternate, and we cross small streams that carry debris into the valley during heavy rainfall. Further up, it gets rocky at times, and the river disappears more and more into the valley floor. After leaving the forest, we already see the top of the chapel of Val. We encounter a farm where more than twenty donkeys bask in the sun. Then we reach our destination. Val, a small, almost forgotten hamlet on the summer route to the Greina Plain. We stop at Ustria Val and enjoy a house coffee and homemade nut cake with whipped cream.
