Church of the Assumption of Mary

Description

The Church of the Assumption of Mary in Göschenen has an interesting history. As early as 1876, the municipal council and the church council decided to build a new village church. The engineer Ernest von Stockalper, who had taken over the technical management of the Gotthard tunnel after Louis Favre, was also involved. The location of the church caused much debate, but in 1897 the current site in the valley was chosen. The St. Gallen architect August Hardegger designed the three-nave church in the Romanesque style. Bishop Johannes Fidelis Battaglia solemnly consecrated the parish church on 16 September 1900.
