Description

In 1914/1915, Protestant employees of the forestry administration sought a place to hold their church services. The Protestant Reformed Ursern Valley Church, also known as the ‘Soldiers' Church’, was built with donations from the Gotthard garrison and a generous confirmation offering.

The first Protestant services were held at the Hotel Bellevue as early as 1899. Later, the officers' hall of the Altkirch barracks also served as a meeting place. When these rooms were no longer available, it was decided to build a separate church. Zurich architect Friedrich Wehrli was commissioned to design the new building.

The church was built in 1914 on what was then open land on what is now Bahnhofstrasse and was consecrated on 12 December 1915. Today, it is surrounded by residential buildings.

The simple building in the traditional style has a half-hipped roof, an octagonal tower and an entrance area supported by wooden columns. On the south side, there is an extension with a reading room.
