St Wendelin’s Chapel

Description

St Wendelin’s Chapel is first mentioned as early as the 16th century. It was founded by Johannes Bartlime Surset and later dedicated to St Wendelin and other saints. Services were held here regularly until the 18th century. Over time, the chapel lost its significance: from 1804 onwards, it was no longer used as a place of worship and even served as a stable for a time. It was not until many years later that it was restored and re-consecrated in 1983.

The chapel is situated above the village on Oberalpstrasse and is built into the hillside. From the outside, it appears simple, with a small bell tower and a modest entrance. Inside, a peaceful, light-filled space awaits you. Particularly worth seeing are an old painting of Saint Wendelin dating from around 1700, as well as several historical details that tell of the chapel’s long history.
