Steinmandli ‘Human Nature’

Description

The stone sculpture ‘Steinmandli Human Nature’ welcomes travellers, guests and locals to Andermatt and the Ursern Valley. Located at the roundabout just after the Schöllenen Gorge, it points the way to the village, the valley or Andermatt Reuss. For many visitors, the Steinmandli is the first thing they see when they arrive in Andermatt.

The sculpture, which is around seven metres high and weighs 22 tonnes, was created by the internationally renowned Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone. Commissioned by Samih Sawiris, it was created as a new landmark for Andermatt and was officially unveiled on 18 May 2017.

The sculpture is entitled ‘Human Nature’ and symbolises the transformation in Andermatt: it combines tradition and modernity as well as proximity and distance. At the same time, it reflects the simplicity and elemental power of the Alpine landscape and blends in with the impressive mountain world around Andermatt.
