Description
The themed tours in the Ursern Valley offer fascinating insights into the history, culture, and sustainable development of the region. Whether it’s energy, transport, tourism, or architecture – each tour tells a part of the valley’s eventful story.
Tour “Energy and Environment”
Did you know that Andermatt was once supposed to disappear under a reservoir? Fortunately, the people of Ursern successfully resisted this plan. Instead, the region has consistently relied on renewable energy for over 120 years. This tour shows how Andermatt has developed into a sustainable energy location – with stops such as the Gütsch wind farm, the Ursern power plant, or the district heating systems of The Chedi Andermatt and Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen.
Tour “History of Tourism”
The history of tourism in Andermatt began long before the construction of the luxury hotel The Chedi. Even before the First World War, the Ursern Valley attracted guests from all over the world. This tour highlights the transformation from early tourism through times of crisis to modern development – with exciting questions about opportunities, identity, and the future of the region.
Tour “Transport History and Mobility”
The Gotthard has shaped the Ursern Valley for centuries as the most important north-south axis. Discover how transport and mobility have changed over time – from mule tracks to the Gotthard railway and modern tunnels. The tour shows the impact of transport on the population, landscape, and tourism, both past and present.
Tour “Tower of Hospental”
The medieval tower rises above historic Hospental – the centerpiece of an impressive tour. The walk starts at the train station, passes historic buildings such as the Hotel Meyerhof and the baroque Church of the Assumption of Mary, and leads up to the viewing platform with panoramic views over the Ursern Valley.
