Village bridge

Description

The Chapel of St. John, which was probably founded in the late Middle Ages, once stood where the village bridge in Andermatt is today. Its patron saint's day is mentioned as early as 1520. Inside was an altar with a depiction of John the Baptist.

The chapel was located in what was then a suburb near today's Hotel Dreikönige. As this was where the old road over the Oberalp Pass began and the Gotthard Way crossed the Reuss, it probably served as a wayside chapel for travellers and muleteers.

By the beginning of the 19th century, the building was in a state of serious disrepair. In 1820, the chapel was demolished and the altar and assets were transferred to the parish church.
