Village fountain
Description
The village fountain, also known as the bear fountain, on the square in front of Andermatt Town Hall is said to have been created in 1581 by Johann II Schmid. The water was collected above the Maria Hilf chapel.
In 1788, Giuseppe Croce from Leventina created the large Rossbrunnen fountain – an additional basin that no longer exists today. The octagonal fountain basin bears the Ursner coat of arms on its front. The fountain column with the bear dates from the 1950s.
Another fountain was built in 1827 in the suburbs of Andermatt, in the area where the Hotel Löwen was later built.
Other buildings also had their own water sources: the Capuchin hospice drew its water from a pipe west of the Maria Hilf chapel in Andermatt, while the Hotel Bellevue used water from a spring on the Kirchberg above Andermatt.
