Traffic jam management before the Gotthard Pass opens: what you need to know

Andermatt, April 16, 2025

As every year, special traffic jam management will be in place on the A2 motorway before the Gotthard Pass opens. From 4 April to probably mid-May 2025, five measures will once again be implemented in the canton of Uri to minimise traffic diversions through the Uri Oberland and the Ursern Valley.

These regulations affect both arrivals and departures in our holiday region. Plan enough time for your journey during this time, especially at weekends and on public holidays.

The most important measures at a glance

Motorway entrances closed in the event of traffic jams

The motorway entrances in Göschenen and Wassen southbound will remain closed from a traffic jam length of three kilometres. The aim is to prevent avoidance traffic on the cantonal road.

Time window for the Göschenen entrance

To ensure that locals, employees and visitors can still travel south when the entrances are closed, the Göschenen entrance will be opened four times a day for 15 minutes at a time:

  • 06.45 am – 07.00 am

  • 08.15 am – 08.30 am

  • 05.15 pm – 05.30 pm

  • 06.45 pm – 07.00 pm

Speed reduction on the A2

From a traffic jam length of eight kilometres, the speed between Altdorf and Amsteg will be reduced to 80 km/h. This is intended to slow down the flow of traffic and reduce the risk of accidents at the end of traffic jams.

Exit metering in Erstfeld and Amsteg

Depending on the traffic load on the cantonal road, the exits in Erstfeld and Amsteg will be metered in order to minimise congestion.
