The High Five: Susten - Grimsel - Nufenen - Lukmanier - Oberalp
Route Information
Description
The legendary five-pass tour around Andermatt is one of the most impressive and challenging road bike tours in Switzerland. With five high alpine pass crossings, it demands physical stamina, good mountain technique and clever strength management. Right at the start, the route takes you up high. The ascent from Wassen is around 18 km long with an average gradient of around 7%. The well-maintained road leads through spectacular hairpin tunnels and past thundering waterfalls. Once at the top, there is a breathtaking view of the Stein Glacier. The descent into the Bernese Oberland is fast, but not too technically difficult. The next long climb begins from Innertkirchen. The 26 km long ascent has moderate gradients of around 6-7%, but the often strong headwind can be energy-sapping. The barren high mountain landscape with its reservoirs provides a unique panorama. After the pass, there is a fast but windy descent into Valais. The highest point of the tour has a steep gradient of 8-10% on average. The 13 km long ascent from Ulrichen requires strength and stamina. The road is well asphalted but not very shady - a challenge on hot days. The descent into Ticino is steep and winding, so a safe line choice is required. From Biasca, the route leads over a long, moderately ascending road up to the Lukmanier Pass. With a maximum gradient of around 7%, it is technically easier than the previous passes, but the 40 km ascent still makes it challenging. The pass summit rewards you with a sweeping view and a pleasantly rolling descent to Sedrun. The final ascent from Disentis is once again challenging. Over 10 km with a gradient of around 7%, the last reserves of strength are required. The road is well maintained and offers a picturesque backdrop with views of the source of the Rhine. Once at the top, the finish in Andermatt is reached after a short but rapid descent.
