Description
The first pass to be conquered from Andermatt is the Furka. Racing cyclists cover eleven kilometers to the top of the pass at 2436 m above sea level. Further on in the canton of Valais, a long descent into the Gommertal valley awaits. Don't forget to fortify yourself, because this is where the 13-kilometre ascent to the Nufenen (2478 m above sea level) begins. As the second highest asphalted pass in Switzerland after the Umbrail, the Nufenen is quite a challenge. In the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, you are welcomed with a wonderful descent to Airolo, where the third pass ride up to the Gotthard (2091 m above sea level) finally begins. Most of the traffic disappears into the fourth longest tunnel in the world, the rest takes the main road to the pass. The racing cyclists pedal upwards on the old road, known as La Tremola. Once the pass is reached, Andermatt is only a few kilometers further down.
